Every Frame a Painting is one of my favorite YouTube channels. Tony Zhou breaks down filmmaking techniques in ways even us non-filmmaker types can understand. And it’s fascinating.

Here’s a short example called ‘Who Wins the Scene?’

I’ve been thinking about how I can apply some of the visual techniques he discusses to my fiction. This week, whenever I get bogged down in the plot details or the minutia of my writing, I’ve been asking myself ‘Who is going to win this scene, and how am I going to show it?’

Like most of us, I’m a busy guy. I’ve got a full-time job. I’ve got a family. This means I have to be very organized with my time if I want to get my writing done. And I’m not an organized guy by nature. One thing I do to keep myself on track is to use a production calendar. I explain more about it in this video.
