In which I give myself an ultimatum: finish the first draft of my novel Regulation 19 by October 31st or delete the manuscript from existence.

  1. Hi PT,

I'd be interested to hear what tools you use for your writing. Also do you use your 'dream tool' or do with what you have (not meaning to sound snobbish!).

Why the interest? Well I'm studying for my final year of a degree and so have returned to the world of note taking. Now I'm rubbish at organising paper based notes and my handwriting isn't so good; actually its terrible after a few hours or note taking. I've therefore retired my 2006 17" MBP as this became too heavy to carry around, and have migrated to an entry level MacBook Air 11" (portability) and take notes using iA Writer which removes all distractions from getting the job done (unlike my questions 🙂 ).

Being in full time work I'm completing the degree by distance learning with 90% of the material being online/electronic – this combo has therefore made the impossible, possible.

A subject I'd love to hear about from your perspective.

    Martin.

    1. Hi Martin! Thanks for the comment. I am using a computer I picked up about six months ago – The Samsung Chromebook. It is a polarizing devise to be sure, but it works very well for my needs. I have been using Google Drive for all of my non-day job related word processing and spreadsheet needs for a couple of years, so the Chromebook works perfectly for me. It's fast, it's cheap, and it has a great keyboard for typing fast. I also use Evernote for taking notes.

Is it my dream tool? Definitely not! I'd love a MacBook at some point. But it does the job for now, and if you don't mind working in a 'cloud-based' environment, I think it's great. Not the good at all for music recording though. I still have my old 2007 laptop for that.

      PT
